APA Explained
The Advance Provisioning Allowance is a prepaid fund — typically 30–35% of the charter fee — placed with the captain at the start of the trip. It covers all running costs: fuel, food, drinks, marina fees, port dues, and sundries. Any unused APA is returned at the end of the charter. If it runs short, you top it up. It is not a hidden fee — but first-timers are often surprised by how quickly it depletes when motoring heavily or dining at expensive marinas.
Watch out
Never charter without getting a projected APA estimate from your broker in writing. Unbudgeted APA overrun is the number-one complaint from first-time charterers.
