Starboard refers to the right-hand side of a sea vessel or boat, specifically when an individual is facing forward towards the ship's bow. In nautical terms, the bow refers to the forward part of the ship. This orientation remains constant, regardless of the direction the observer is facing on the ship. The starboard is often marked by green lights on most ships for easy identification. The term "starboard" is chiefly used in maritime activities to avoid any confusion that could result from interchanging left or right, especially in high-stake navigation situations. This term is contrasted with 'port', which refers to the left-hand side of the ship when facing the bow.

Example

1. When directing the crew, the captain frequently instructed them to move heavier equipment to the starboard side to balance out the ship's weight. 2. As she was standing at the helm facing the bow, Lily noticed a school of dolphins playing on the starboard side. 3. During drills, the passengers were asked to gather towards the ship's starboard side for safety instructions and a demonstration of the life vests. 4. As the sun began to set, the vibrant colors in the sky created a picturesque view on the starboard side of the yacht. 5. The fishing lines were cast off the starboard side of the boat, due to a higher concentration of fish detected in that area by their built-in sonar.

Interesting fact

The term "Starboard" originated from the Old Norse term "stýriboarð", which literally translates to "steering board". In the early seafaring days, boats and ships were controlled using a steering oar that was usually on the right-hand side of the vessel, as most sailors were right-handed. Hence, that side of the boat became known as the "steering board" side, which over time evolved into the term "starboard". So, the name starboard actually reflects a little bit of nautical history, pointing back to a time even before the invention of rudders. This contrasts with the term "port", which used to be called "larboard", but was changed due to the possibility of it being confused with starboard.
