The primary function of a dock is to facilitate a secure area for the ships for loading, unloading, repair, or refueling. Beyond serving as a safe harbor for vessels, docks often have equipment and infrastructure to assist with the movement of cargo and passengers. Although most often used interchangeably with terms such as piers or wharves, a dock technically refers to the water area, while the pier or wharf refers more specifically to the structures built alongside or protruding into the water to enable docking of vessels.
